How to Choose a Web Designer: 10 Questions to Ask Before You Hire
Choosing a web designer is one of the most important decisions you make for your business online. The right person gives you a website that looks professional, loads quickly, appears on Google and brings in real enquiries. The wrong choice can leave you with a site that is slow, hard to update and quietly losing customers.
I work as a web designer and WordPress developer in Famagusta, building websites for businesses in North Cyprus and abroad. In this guide I share the ten questions I would ask any web designer before hiring them, and what good answers sound like.
1. Can I see websites you have designed and still look after?
A portfolio of live websites tells you more than any promise. Open them on your phone, check how fast they load and how easy it is to find a phone number or contact form. A web designer who still maintains the sites they built is usually proud of how they hold up over time.
2. How will you learn about my business and customers?
Good web design starts with questions, not templates. Expect your web designer to ask who your customers are, which languages they speak, what they search for and what you want them to do on the website: call, send a WhatsApp message, book or buy.
3. Which platform will you use, and will I own the website?
Ask which system the site will run on and who owns the domain, hosting and content. With WordPress you own your website completely and can move it to another provider at any time. I explain why I build business websites this way in Why WordPress Is Still the Best Choice for Business Websites.
4. Will the website be designed for phones first?
Most visitors arrive on a phone, so the mobile version should be planned first, not squeezed in at the end. Ask to see the mobile design during the project and test it on your own phone before launch.
5. How fast will the website load?
Speed affects both visitors and Google. A good web designer talks about image optimization, caching and Core Web Vitals without being asked. If you want to understand the basics, Core Web Vitals for WordPress: A Plain-Language Guide explains what Google measures.
6. What do you do for SEO?
A beautiful website nobody finds does not help your business. Ask whether page titles, descriptions, headings, structured data, a sitemap and Google Search Console are part of the project. These foundations should be in place on launch day.
7. Can the website speak my customers’ languages?
In a place like North Cyprus, customers often speak English, Turkish, German, Russian or Persian. If you need more than one language, ask how each language will get its own address and SEO, and whether right-to-left layouts are supported. 8. Will I be able to update the website myself?
You should be able to change texts, photos and prices without calling anyone. Ask for a short training session at handover and a simple guide you can come back to later.
9. How does the project run, step by step?
A clear process protects both sides. Look for a written proposal with the pages and features, a design you approve before building starts, previews during development and a defined launch checklist. Payments are usually split into stages that follow this process.
10. What happens after launch?
Websites need updates, backups and the occasional new page. Ask who looks after security and updates, how quickly the web designer responds and what ongoing care costs. A designer who plans for the long term is a partner, not just a supplier.
Signs you have found the right web designer
- They ask about your customers before talking about colours.
- Their live websites are fast and easy to use on a phone.
- They explain technical topics in plain language.
- You receive a clear written proposal and timeline.
- You will own your domain, website and content.
Thinking about an app as well?
Many businesses start with a website and later add a mobile app for regular customers. If that is on your mind, choose a web designer who can also build or plan the app, so both share the same content and design. As a Flutter app developer, I build apps for Android and iPhone that read their content straight from your WordPress website.
Frequently asked questions
Should I hire a freelance web designer or an agency?
Both can work well. A freelance web designer usually gives you direct contact with the person building your site and flexible pricing, while an agency offers a larger team. What matters most is the quality of their live work and how clearly they communicate.
How long does it take to design a business website?
A focused business website usually takes a few weeks from the first conversation to launch. Multilingual or larger websites take longer, and a good web designer shows the timeline in the proposal.
What should I prepare before contacting a web designer?
A short description of your business and customers, a few websites you like, your logo and photos if you have them, and the languages you need. Even rough notes help the first conversation go much further.
Is it worth redesigning an old website instead of starting again?
Often, yes. A careful redesign keeps the addresses and content that already rank on Google and improves design and speed. Website Redesign: 7 Signs Your Business Website Needs a Refresh helps you decide.
